Find yourself breaking out after the gym? Not to worry, this is a common issue! As with all skin issues, there are many factors as well as ways to prevent acne from occurring.
Dr. Arash Akhavan, MD, FAAD, founder and owner of The Dermatology & Laser Group in NYC confirms, “although sweat itself doesn’t usually cause the most typical forms of acne, sometimes our sweat can mix with bacteria such as staphylococcus aureus (staph bacteria) and certain types of yeast called pityrosporum and cause inflamed follicles that can appear as acne-like lesions on our face and torso.”
And back! If you’ve been hitting the gym hard lately, and find that your back is breaking out – invest in a long handle back brush for the shower. This will help you reach and exfoliate the pores that are getting clogged and breaking out.
If you go to the gym in the evenings after work, the only thing you’re thinking about when you finally make it home is eating and going to bed. DON’T. You need to rinse and save your sheets the harassment of your sweaty, salty body! The sweat and bacteria doesn’t just “go away” – it continues to grow and smell and could be one reason you’re having acne issues.
And THINK about. If you’re trying to impress the guy or gal you’re seeing – letting them lay their clean body in your dirty sheets is NOT the way to do it.
Although you’d hope most gyms do their very best to keep their equipment, yoga mats, and bathrooms clean – it’s still a gym. People are continuously bringing germs and bacteria from the outside, then sweating and on top of that….not always wiping down the equipment after use. It happens!
The lesson here: stop touching your face when working out.
