Last post, we talked about setting skincare goals for 2018. Since New Year’s Day, I’ve selected yet another skincare habit to take up moving forward! Exfoliating the body TWICE a week. Yes, twice. After reading up on all the benefits, I started to realize that using body scrubs/salts shouldn’t solely be used as a “relaxing, every once in a while to treat to oneself” thing.
As we all know, the main benefit of exfoliating is to remove dead skin and leave your shower feeling silky-smooth. For my bacne and I (the acne on my back) this is especially important because it jumpstarts the process of drawing out congestion. Congestion, otherwise known as blackheads/whiteheads, is caused by the buildup of dead skin cells. Yuck!
SO – twice a week it is. And ONLY twice a week! Remember, the goal is to unclog your pores from excess oil. Exfoliating too often can strip away your natural oils, leaving an imbalance in your pH levels.
On top of these benefits – did you know that regularly exfoliating can benefit the rest of your skincare routine? During the winter, my legs get so dry they look like baby alligators! (I know, disturbing analogy) Applying lotion after baths and showers helps, but really the trick to lotion reaching the deeper layers of your skin is by removing the dead cells on the top layer. SO – start providing the depths of your skin with the best nourishment and stop wasting product!
BENEFITS OF EXFOLIATING THE BODY:
- Reduces the chance of breakouts
- Allows your lotion to seep into deeper layers of the skin
- Assists in a smoother/cleaner shave
- Can help to prevent ingrown hairs
