Hints About Melanoma


Even as the incidence of many common cancers is falling, melanoma the most serious of skin cancers is rising.

If you had 2 or more of the risk factors listed below, you have a five to ten times greater than others with no risk factors of getting melanoma.
The American Academy of Dermatology recommends checking moles regularly, this is what you look for:
  • asymmetry (one half looks like the other half)
  • border (irregular, scalloped, or poorly defined)
  • color (varies from one area to the other)
  • different shades of tan, brown or black or sometime red, white or blue)
  • diameter (the size of a pencil eraser or larger)
  • evolving (changing in size, shape, or color)
It is always prudent to have a professional check your skin and moles on a regular basis.
