Brazilian Wax Information For Females Only:
So, you've heard about brazilian waxing and have decided to take the plunge! What can you expect from your first waxing? Where did it come from? Brazilian waxing first came to the United States via New York and was brought here by seven Brazilian born sisters. In Brazil it is common to remove hair from the genital area; their bathing suits are revealing and hair peeking out is a no-no.
Brazilian waxing is removing all hair from the frontal pubic area (the mound or apex), about 2 inches where the upper thigh meets the pubic area, the labia and the anal area. Some leave an optional landing strip which in most cases is hair on the mound in the shape of a rectangle or triangle. Brazilian waxing is a hot topic; it's great cocktail party conversation; it is buzzed around in the media; it touches everyone. My clients range from age 18 to 70 and everything in between: attorneys to bartenders to moms.
We ladies wax because it's sexy; tight fitting, sheer clothes lie better; its cleaner; its sensual; and our men like it. They like it so much that women are now asking their men to get Male Brazilian Waxes and they are saying "okay!".
Are you still on the fence? Let me answer some questions that you may have.
Q. How long is my brazilian wax going to take?
A. It generally takes 15 to 30 minutes and I work fast. My clients prefer it that way; why should you be uncomfortable longer that you have to? I work fast and I also try to get all of your hair. The first time may not be as smooth as subsequent times because your hair is different lengths and it takes a little time for your hair and skin to get into the waxing groove. Did I mention that all my work is guaranteed? I want you to be happy.
Q. Should you wax during your period?
A. Many say that waxing right before your period is not advisable; hormones make hair coarser, making it prone to breakage so the waxing does not last as long. You also may be more sensitive. But, then I just read that some say your should not wax after your period. It's confusing. Do what's right for you. Many gals come in with a tampon and I work around them and it's no big deal.
Q. Should I tell the esthetician that I am pregnant?
A. Always notify the esthetican if you are pregnant; taking medication (even if it is temporary), and anything else that might affect the waxing. I can then decide how to wax you so that it is the most comfortable for you. Many things can affect your waxing experience so it is important to give me as much information as possible.
Q. Will I be naked?
A. Yes. It's one of those things, it is very difficult to do a Brazilian with any clothes on and by the time the thongs etc are moved around, we could be done. I am a Registered Nurse and have seen it all. I probably have seen more genitals than your gynecologist.
Q. Will it hurt?
A. The short answer is yes. The long answer is that it depends on you and your pain tolerance. See my Pre Waxing Tips for some ways to lessen the pain. If it makes you feel any better, women tolerate pain way better than men.
Q. How long should my hair be?
A. Make sure your hair is long enough before your waxing. Many, many women don't realize that hair has to be a minimum of 1/4 inch (preferably 1/2 inch for the 1st wax.) That means 2 to 3 weeks of growth for most.
Q. What can I expect during a brazilian wax?
A. This is what you can expect: First, I will clean and disinfect the area. After that I will apply the wax and remove small areas of hair at a time. I use three types of wax and use what I think will work the best in the area I am waxing. Strip wax is the most popular and a thin layer of wax is applied to the skin, a strip of paper is laid over the wax and pulled in the opposite direction of the hair growth. Roll on wax is applied with an applicator, is fabulous for legs and removed the same way strip wax is. Hard wax is soft when it is applied, it hardens, an edge is brought up and pulled removing the wax in the opposite direction of the hair growth. A light almond oil is then applied to remove wax residue.
Q. How long will my brazilian wax last?
A. Your first wax will grow a bit faster than subsequent waxes and you will possibly notice re-growth in 10 days. By the third regular wax (done every 4 weeks) you will notice that your hair is finer and not as dense and you will feel less discomfort. The re-growth will be slowed and you will notice that it can take from 3 to 4 weeks to come back so you will feel basically hair free most of the time.
Q. What if I am prone to ingrown hairs?
A. Don't worry, many people are. Read my Post-Waxing Tips for information on exfoliation and products for ingrown hair.
Brazilian Waxing for Voluptuous Ladies:
- Brazilian waxing has nothing to do with size or any other physical characteristics. Never be embarrassed about how you look. Think about it like a visit to the doctor. Estheticians are licensed and are trained professionals. Pat yourself on the back because you care about hygiene and feeling sexy.
- Perspiration is another common issue of voluptuous women especially in the summer. You do not want your skin folds in the lower abdominal area to break down and as a result have red and irritated skin. Additionally, voluptuous women are prone to ingrown hairs especially on the inner thighs due to friction. It is important to keep the skin conditioned and follicles open by exfoliating on a regular basis. (Use a synthetic poof or loofah with clear body wash and wash the area waxed in circular movements. Do not scrub too hard.)
